In my latest piece, « Advaita, » performed and sung softly in Italian, I explore a profound spiritual theme inspired by the Taoist tradition of Neidan—inner alchemy. The lyrics reflect a gentle contemplation of unity beyond duality:
Una morte,Ritornata alla terra,Elevata al cielo.
(A death, returned to the earth, elevated to the sky.)
This poetic imagery represents the Taoist alchemical return to origins, the subtle interplay of Yin and Yang, earth and sky, body and spirit. To sonically embody this delicate balance, I turned to my modular synthesizer setup, specifically employing the Diode Chaos by Zlob Modular.
Why Diode Chaos?
Diode Chaos is an analog chaos generator module, compact yet incredibly expressive, providing organic modulation signals that beautifully mirror the unpredictable yet harmonious nature of inner transformation explored in Neidan.
The module produces three distinct chaotic modulation outputs:
- X Output: Slow, gentle fluctuations ideal for subtly animating filters or resonances, creating organic sonic breaths.
- Y Output: Intermediate modulation adding nuanced motion to oscillators and waveshapers.
- Z Output: Rapid, intense chaotic signals with an accompanying gate output, perfect for generating irregular rhythmic patterns and percussive textures.
Sonic Alchemy: Integrating Diode Chaos with Guitar
In this musical exploration, my guitar serves as an initial expressive voice, processed through the Instruo Tahn, then into Qu-Bit Cascade’s envelope follower. The nuanced dynamics of my guitar playing thus directly influence the Diode Chaos, creating an intimate interplay where human gesture meets modular unpredictability.
The specific signal routing is as follows:
Guitar → Tahn (Preamp) → Cascade (Envelope Follower) → Diode Chaos (modulated indirectly via envelope follower signals).
From here, I route:
- Diode Chaos X and Y outputs into frequency CV or filter resonance parameters of Prism filter, allowing subtle modulation that breathes organically in sync with my guitar’s dynamic.
- Diode Chaos Z (gate output) triggers irregular rhythmic pulses via Ritual Electronics Pointeuse, bringing to life spontaneous rhythmic textures.
A Metaphor for Inner Transformation
The Diode Chaos symbolizes the Taoist concept of Hundun (混沌)—primordial chaos. Just as spiritual practice aims to harness and harmonize internal energies, the module captures and sculpts sonic unpredictability into something deeply musical and spiritually resonant.
In performance, as I sing « Advaita » softly in Italian, the gentle chaotic modulations reflect the lyrical contemplation of unity amidst duality, fear, and despair, each influencing the other in subtle, meaningful ways:
« L’uno non cammina senza l’altro.Paura e disperazione,Ognuno a modo suo. »
(« One doesn’t walk without the other. Fear and despair, each in its own way. »)
Thus, the interplay of voice, guitar, and Diode Chaos becomes a living metaphor for the spiritual and alchemical process, transforming chaos into harmony, and sound into contemplation.
With this fusion of modular synthesis and poetic symbolism, « Advaita » emerges as a meditative exploration, resonating deeply with the timeless wisdom of Neidan Taoism.
